Though New York-based artist Brandon Morris trained in dressmaking at Parsons Institute of Art, he chose to pursue a career in art instead of fashion. In his most recent work titled Actress, Morris skillfully combines his extensive experience in both fashion and art with his interest in paranormal phenomena to create a unique and thought-provoking piece. The installation, which is currently at New York City’s Europa Gallery, features a series of ghostly, 3-dimensional Victorian gowns crafted in fiberglass and coated in resin. Back in Issue 11, I wrote about how my current inspiration was director Wong Kar-wai’s In the Mood for Love, one of my favorite films. It’s also a movie that is repeatedly tapped for inspiration by fashion designers because of its color-saturated, yet hazy and romantic atmosphere. Well, Prada decided to solidify the fashion world’s obsession with the director’s visual language by channeling his distinctive film aesthetic into a cinematic restaurant in Shanghai. KIDS LOVE GAITE is a little-known Japanese shoemaker helmed by designer Shintaro Yamamoto. Born in Tokyo and educated in the UK, Yamamoto learned the craft of shoemaking with John Moore in London before heading back to Japan in 2000. Recognized for his ability to meld traditional construction techniques with edgy, modern designs, Yamamoto has been working the last few seasons with visionary designer Rei Kawakubo of COMME des GARÇONS.
